NRG Well Examination

Well Examination is the Independent Assessment, on behalf of a Well Operator, to verify that wells are being adequately designed and constructed in accordance with the appropriate industry standards in order to reduce the risks of a well release to as low as reasonably practicable.

In the UK Well Examination is a legal requirement as defined by Regulation 18 of the Offshore Installations and Wells (Design and Construction, etc) Regulations.

Well examination is carried out in accordance with the Well Operator's Well Examination Scheme and it is applied to the life-cycle of every well from its initial design through well construction into the production operations phase and finally to well abandonment.

Well design and construction examination is usually carried out as an integrated package and is targeted at the pressure boundary of the well to ensure that this is adequate for the intended well's purpose and includes an examination of all the pressure containment equipment that forms part of the well to ensure that the design is suitable. Examination therefore encompasses the well's Basis of Design, the casing and kick tolerance design, the design of pressure control equipment as well as the examination of the well programme to ensure that all the risks have been evaluated and the control measures are adequate to ensure that the risks of a well release during well construction and afterwards are as low as reasonably practicable. Following well design examination the actual operations (in progress) are examined against the programme as well as any changes that may be required to the programme during operations.

Following drilling, if applicable, the well abandonment (or suspension) design is examined. For completed wells the completion design will have been examined and then following well handover Production Well Examination begins.

NRG, as Well Examiners, are fully independent of the Operator's line management. We have been instrumental in the development and execution of Well Examination schemes for many UK Operators since 1996. Well Examination is also performed for the International Operations of some Clients who wish to promote Independent Verification as part of an integrated QA/QC approach to Well Safety.
